When you are planning a new conference room, you’ll need to think about where you would like to have your laptop connect. There are several routes you can take. One of the most common is to install a simple wall connection plate. Your AV integrator can provide a longer computer cable (15’, 25’ or even longer!) so that you can reach a podium or table. One of the drawbacks to having this type of system is that you may have cables running across your floor, which can be unsightly as well as a trip hazard. Another option would be to have a room-dedicated PC or laptop. This dedicated computer can be at a table or podium, or, you can hide it away inside your podium or rack, and utilize a wireless mouse and keyboard. If you don’t like the idea of a wireless mouse and keyboard, there are now products available that allow you to run the cables and power thru a cable chase, similar to the “speed bumps” available in most office stores. These newer products are OSHA compliant, and can be mounted on top of or even underneath the carpeting. They terminate in a small connection box that can be placed under the conference room table or inside the podium. If you’re lucky enough to be working with new construction, speak to your contractor and architect about providing core drills. These holes can be various sizes depending on the connections you need, and can provide cable access exactly where you need it.
